HEADQUARTERS
The House of Waiwera’s headquarters in Parnell, which opened in June 2011, is the hub of The Waiwera Society.
The society’s recorded interviews with public and influential figures are conducted here, and the brand’s special events are hosted in this space throughout the year.
It’s also home to our new archival centre. We’re documenting and preserving New Zealand history, to connect us to the people and events that brought us here.
PARNELL

Parnell’s development began in 1841, but it wasn’t until the 1970s when Les Harvey created the Parnell Village that we see today. It was his initial effort to restore the village’s heritage that has made it was it is now, and the reason it’s the perfect location for Waiwera’s headquarters.
Les Harvey’s son Kevin is continuing his father’s work in preserving the Parnell area.
“We’ve always worked it as a family, for years” he says.
“We’ve turned what used to be bedrooms into little cafés and beautiful little shops. We’ve tried to make it a place where people can feel that they’re respected, that they’re loved and that they do have a place.
Dad passed away about twenty years ago but my brother and sister and I, we’ve worked on preserving it and creating a beautiful ambience.”
Kevin says that to him, heritage is “just keeping old memories alive”.
“It is partly in bricks and mortar, but sometimes I think it’s okay to change things a little bit in order to keep it alive.
That’s the only constant thing, change – really, seriously.
I think a lot of people are trying to preserve heritage too perfectly, and they actually lose it totally.”
